Most commercial carriers do not require EDI paperwork in order to submit claims electronically. It is recommended, however, that you contact the carrier prior to submitting electronic claims to complete any steps that the carrier requires; such as an NPI enrollment process, a billing address enrollment process, etc.
EDI paperwork is usually required by carriers to request Electronic Remittance Advice and to assign the receiver of your ERAs.
If you are enrolling in EFT you must contact your Financial Institution to arrange for the delivery of the CORE required minimum CCD+ Data elements necessary for successful reassociation of the EFT files to their corresponding ERA files. It is always recommended that you make sure that the payer has the appropriate Tax ID, NPI(s), and pay-to address on file.
